The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
